Mayor Wonka and the New Orleans Chocolate Factory

Between apologies and damage control, Mayor Nagin of New Orleans may have failed to grasp one of the most detrimental results of his recent remarks. Whether God sent a judgment to New Orleans for its sinfulness is open to debate and perhaps there is no way of knowing that answer until the fat lady sings. What Ray Nagin said about New Orleans being “a chocolate city” is a bit easier to weigh and it weighs in under the lightweight category for sure. Since hurricane Katrina Ray Nagin has taken on a celebrity status. Now everything he says is public domain as quick as it is uttered. His ...

A few days ago, I realized that the US presidential election is fast approaching. You see, I was watching the news a few nights ago and I saw a political ad endorsing Sen. Hillary Clinton. I also saw the results of the results of the recent election 2008 polls on the news. It dawned upon me that the election will be held next year. This event is clearly very important because it will determine the direction of our country. It will also affect the whole world as the newly elected president will make decisions regarding foreign policies. Of course, the next thing that entered my mind was ...

Current Affairs : Fly Your Flag Proudly

  • 11-01-2011, 05:48

It is so reassuring to drive down the street and see our national flag flying proudly in the wind. The problem is most people only do it occasionally. So what are those days that are appropriate to fly the flag? January 1—start the year out right, even in the snow, and fly the flag on New Year’s Day. January 20—is Inauguration Day and it is a very good day to show our respect for the office held by our President as the President of the United States of America. January-- the third Monday is the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a day to show our support for the rights o...

EcoHorsefeathers

I think we can all agree. The only reason the world continues to heat up like a cauldron of linguini, the only reason the air we breath becomes day by day worse than the air Saddam had the Kurdish villagers breath, the only reason lumps the size of Al Gore still drop off the northern ice cap, is than none of the politicians or the twenty million a year CEOs have yet figured out a way of making a Big Buck out of it. By Big, we mean Exxon Mobile Big. Like, say, $10.4 billion a quarter Big? Well, hold on, kiddy winks, There is some good news and some bad news. The good news is that one ...

  • 9-01-2011, 06:35

Labor unions have been well known for their support of progressive causes. Many of them make regular donations to Democratic politicians. The largest labor organizations, such as the AFL-CIO and SEIU, were central to the election of Barack Obama. Heads of these organizations have been throwing their support behind reform of America's health insurance plan system. However, recent developments in the healthcare deform debate have stirred doubts in union organizers. Unions intend to represent their members' interests, although their ...

Current Affairs : Arming Students with Defense Weapons

  • 9-01-2011, 05:08

April 16, 2007 changed the face of the security of our college campuses forever. The terrible tragedy at Virginia Tech redefined our views of student safety while they are on campus. It has also raised some questions. Could this have been prevented? Could crimes against students on campus be prevented? What steps can the administration of the universities take to ensure the safety of their students? Should students be allowed to be proactive and carry pepper spray, stun guns, air Tasers or Taser guns while on campus? What ramifications could a measure such as this have in the level of v...

Almost 7 years after 9/11, WTC rescue workers are sick and not being supported

My name is Irv Kaplan and I am from Manhattan. I started this blog after the crane crash in Manhattan on March 15th. If you are unfamiliar with the story, 7 people were injured (6 construction workers and one person visiting here). Seeing all of the rescue workers searching for those presumed dead obviously reminded me of 9/11 and the massive effort undertaken to unearth the rubble after the WTC crash. For over 8 months, rescue workers were at the site and had to deal with bleak and dangerous conditions. After the tragedy of 9/11, America and this city in particular, felt a renewed commitment ...
