Monitoring harbour walls, water tank corrosion, damage to sea structure, and other structures that are submerged in water has now become a little easier. Many water authorities harbour commissions and local governments are now turning to using miniature underwater robots. Small in size and highly maneuverable these robotic ROV’s use powerful lights, and have cameras on board. This means divers are not needed as often, which puts fewer lives at risk and reduces the cost involved to maintain water tanks, towers and other inaccessible underwater structures.

The benefits of using underwater ROV

In addition to cutting costs, there are other benefits when using underwater remotely operated vehicles. These benefits include the following:

• The ability to fit into tight or small chambers to inspect underwater structures. • The ability to capture clear colour images in salt or fresh water. • The ability to take samples of the water. • Only needs 800 watts of power which can be supplied by a small generator. • Controlled by an experienced pilot the ROV is easy to maneuver into normally inaccessible areas. • Ability to receive and record live feed video footage and inspection so it can be analyzed later or in the future. • Causes less visibility disturbance than a diver when maneuvering underwater allowing for clearer film footage.

In the past, divers faced many challenges when inspecting water tanks. Many times, it was impossible to inspect all areas of tanks because they simply could not configure their bodies and bulky equipment to take accurate clear images. The diving equipment which included restricting head gear and umbilical lines was cumbersome and was inadvertently a risk to a diver’s life because they could have become trapped in a small space. Divers working in contaminated environments also risked their own health, which is why there were so few willing to engage in this type of work and why those who did charged more for their services.
